Blendi Fevziu is the best in this genre of literature. Written by Albanian journalist Blendi Fevziu it glendi very reliable and authoritative — and certainly makes for some horrific reading. I knew that Hoxha was a dictator at least as paranoid and senseless as Romania’s Ceausescu, but I was largely unfamiliar with the context, the evolution and the main pawns.
On its launch a quarter century after Hoxha’s death, some Albanians burned original language copies of this biography in the envr because it dared to criticise their former leader even though he left their country technologically worse off than when he took power, with hundreds dead, thousands imprisoned or interned, and hundreds of thousands starving. For anyone wanting to fnver post-war Albania it is essential. Most of my information about Albania were post-communist international media reports or the books of Ismail Kadare, as the most sources were in a language I do not know.
Group of people led from Hoxha used tactically the wave of rising ideology in Eastern Europe to establish and later to isolate 2 millions Albanians, and to punch down perspective of many more to come in later decades and further.
Even though I never lived those terrible years and I didn’t suffer the misery that those poor people did, I now know the reason why this blemdi of full potential, never developed properly.
